Formula Student is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Backed by industry and high profile engineers, the competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers. Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle.
During the main event at the Hockenheimring in Germany, our team had to get trough several test to ensure the security and performance of our car. The pit lane was full of teams from around the world which created a vivid and exciting atmosphere.
The whole project was self funded, developed and constructed. As part of the team I was responsible for the visual design language of our car. After an intensive sketching phase the most promising direction was tested in a scale model. To see the surfaces in reality helped to take the design even further during the process. As the construction of our frame and engine came along it was time to transfer the design into a 1in1 CAD model. To create our moulds I build a full scaled prototype out of styrofoam ensuring measurements and surface quality. The final bodywork was laminated with Carbon and Glass fibre.
